Sixth Form Politics & International Relations students meet Anna Soubry

Fresh from interrogating Boris Johnson PM in the Commons on Thursday morning, Anna Soubry MP hopped on a train to a perhaps more important and challenging encounter; meeting the girls of the Sixth Form Politics & International Relations Elective. Anna is a prominent politician these days after a successful career in Law and television, and her most recent role has seen her advocating the Remain cause in the ongoing Brexit saga, determined to uphold parliamentary sovereignty and hold the government to account.

Anna was last at the High School for Question Time in May and promised to visit again, this time to talk to the girls. Our girls raised a diverse range of issues as they got the chance to ask Anna a host of questions. Topics ranged from votes for sixteen year olds, the Northern Ireland border, the potential impact of no deal Brexit on real-time supply chains and the recent decision of the Supreme Court to end the prorogation of Parliament.

Anna also spoke about her decision to enter the political arena, her family, the abuse she has received as an MP and how to speak confidently in public. She was funny, engaging and honest and I am sure the girls learned a lot and were inspired as well as entertained. Head Girl, Isabel, gave Anna a quick tour of the school before the taxi arrived to race her to the station for a trip back into the current political maelstrom.

On behalf of all the girls, we were all immensely grateful that Anna was so giving of her valuable time and spoke with such tremendous passion. We wish her all the best for the momentous weeks ahead.

'Romans and Romance: What did the Romans do for Languages?'

Everyone is warmly invited to our first meeting, which will explore the links between Latin, the Romance languages and English, tracing links back to proto-Indo-European as well as other language families, and considering the many varied ways in which language change occurs in unexpected ways over time and space.

The session will end by considering how our own language is changing ever more quickly!

School Sport

The week has been busy for the U12s, taking part in the annual U12 Loughborough Hockey Tournament. The A and B teams both came up against hard opposition, playing Amherst School, Loughborough High, King Henry VIII, Nottingham and Princethorpe. During the week they also played Kimbolton along with the U13s.

Good luck to both year groups who play King Henry VIII tomorrow.

Hockey: On Saturday 28 September, 9 members of the NHS A team travelled to compete in a mini tournament against Loughborough High School, Nottingham High School and Amherst. The score against Amherst was 1-0 to us, and the goal was scored by Tanishqa. Next we played against Loughborough High School, and despite playing well, we lost 8-0. However, I believe the team still kept their heads high. In our final match against Nottingham High School, we lost 3-1. This time we didn’t play our best but by the end of the season, and with a but more work, we will be unstoppable. Hattie

Hockey: Last Saturday, the U12 B team entered a hockey tournament at Loughborough High School. We played three matches and although we lost all of them I am still proud of my team. We persevered and were so close to scoring a goal several times, so overall I am extremely happy with the way we played. Manha

Book Review

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
recommended for L5 and above

More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results.

Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets.

As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.

‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’ Margaret Atwood

Car Park Safety

We are concerned that the safety of our pupils, staff and parents on site is being compromised by speeding cars on site. There has also been some inconsiderate parking, which causes obstructions and reduces visibility (on double yellow lines for example).

Please can we remind all parents to respect the 5 mph site speed limit, park in designated parking bays only, and give way to pupils and others using the pedestrian crossing points.

Thank you for your cooperation.
