Northampton High School has a thriving and vibrant Music Department offering an inclusive approach to music. A large proportion of girls take lessons on a variety of instruments and performance is to a high standard. The Department houses excellent facilities with a recital room, classrooms, a state of the art ICT suite and numerous practice rooms. The girls are able to enjoy a wide variety of musical styles and the school boasts an orchestra, a range of string ensembles, two choirs, a wind band and brass group, a jazz band, wind quintet,  flute choir, a piano duet club, guitar group and Rock School.

There is a full concert schedule throughout the year, both in school and within the wider community, and our orchestras and bands have also performed at a variety of prestigious functions. Many of our girls are county music school players and also compete in both local and national competitions. Past pupils have gone on to study music at university and music colleges, including the Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College.

Instrumental lessons
In the Senior School over 200 pupils have lessons in school. Overall there are 20 visiting instrumental staff covering all orchestral instruments as well as drums, piano, singing and guitar. Most lessons are taught individually for half an hour with a small number of students choosing shared or group lessons.
