Teaching and Learning in Reception

Under the close supervision of our caring and experienced staff, the young girls work on focused activities and readily begin to develop early reading, writing and mathematical skills. Adult led and planned activities cover all seven areas of learning and development from the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, with the opportunity to begin the Key Stage 1 curriculum if required.

We encourage structured play and activities that are child initiated and use a wide range of resources in different areas of the department, such as the workshop, interactive whiteboard, writing table, practical and art areas. Learning and understanding of topics continues to be enhanced through story, songs, and a wide range of role play.

Independence is encouraged through social interaction and daily routines in the classroom. As they grow in confidence, the girls become more involved in the life of the school with opportunities to join in with assemblies, performance, and special events. With such a happy and positive introduction to school life, the girls look forward to every day and emerge as confident and willing young people, well equipped for the next stage of their education.

Reception girls will always have their teacher and an assistant working in the area with them. They will quickly become familiar with other specialist teachers for Music, PE and Ballet.
